My first class - Testimony of a teacher from Daoming-3
My first class - Written by Wang Fang
I remember when I was a child in the school, teachers always passed list and I responded when I heard my name. Today I am a teacher and I was very excited I was passing list to all students. But what surprised me most is that none of the students knew his own name, because the vast majority of them belong to what is popularly called ""black families, black people"", ie that have no official identity. For them, the name is not important, they only need to know if he is the first, second or third son or daughter. Parents also use this terminology to name their children: 'eldest son, second son ""and so on. Others are appointed by his nickname: ""puppy"" or ""he who was born in the road"" if the child was born in a road or field. This fact has brought us lots of difficulties, as parents demanded that we give a name to their children. Therefore, the name of the vast majority of our students have been born in these difficult circumstances.
So my first class was to bring together parents and students, first explaining that each student should have a proper name. Otherwise, how could I distinguish a particular student among all the others? How can they distinguish themselves who is ""me"", ""you"" and ""him."" In school we can not call a student ""first son"", ""second son"", and so on. So each student has to have its own name. I started to make parents remember the proper name of his son, and we asked parents to respond when naming his son, and every parent should repeat the name several times on behalf of his son. So, little by little, and after numerous repetitions, I was teaching them to recognize his son using his own name. But the next morning, only a small minority of children remembered their name, so I have decided that tomorrow I will have to use all morning to teach them to recognize themselves.
